Talented young students from all over the world come to Leiden to get their PhD. Both Leiden University and the Faculty of Science have a lot to offer to PhD students: an internationally acclaimed staff, ample possibilities for cross disciplinary research, good research facilities, and much attention to supervision and education during your PhD. In other words: a challenging environment to develop on-the-job the skills and networks that a successful academic needs.

Writing a high quality PhD thesis within four years can be very demanding. We will challenge you to develop and deepen your scientific knowledge as well as to develop other skills such as planning, presentation and communication skills. Needless to say you are not left alone. We support you through education and training and provide you with consistent scientific supervision during your PhD, with a focus on the first three years.

All our PhD Students are embedded in the Graduate School of Science and are mostly also connected to a research school which relates to your field of research. The Graduate School offers PhD training courses at three levels: professional courses, skills training and personal effectiveness. Research Schools in addition offer advanced courses to deepen scientific knowledge.

Before the start of your PhD you will draw up a so called Education and Supervision Plan in concert with your supervisor and promoter. This plan will outline what targets you will have to meet in the areas of research and education and arranges your supervision and training necessity. The Education and Supervision plan also lists both the short and long term goals that are essential for making progress in your research.

To make sure you stay on track the Supervision and Education Plan is evaluated yearly and if necessary altered as part of our result and development cycle.

Finally, at the end of your PhD you will be supported to work on your future career perspective through apposite training courses such as career counseling.
